I wanted to make sure that my clients are informed about this change, so I've explained the Real ID requirements below. Starting May
What Is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a state-issued driver's license or identification card that meets federal security standards established by the REAL ID Act. These IDs are marked with a special symbol, typically a star, in the upper corner of the card. For example, in Maryland, a REAL ID-compliant license features a star in the upper right corner.
How to Obtain a REAL ID
To acquire a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card, you will need to visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in person and provide specific documentation. Generally, the required documents include:
I recommend checking the Maryland DMV website or your state's DMV website for a detailed list of acceptable documents and to schedule an appointment.
Alternative Acceptable Forms of Identification
If you do not have a REAL ID by May 7, 2025, you can still travel domestically using alternative forms of identification accepted by the TSA, including:
For a complete list of acceptable identification documents, please visit the TSA's official website.
Not sure if your ID is Real or not?
Here's how to check:
1. Go to https://www.dhs.gov/real-id
2. Click on "Look up my REAL ID status"
3. Enter your current license number
4. It will then let you know if your ID is updated or not
Why Act Now?
Obtaining a REAL ID may take time due to the need for in-person appointments and document verification. To avoid potential travel disruptions, I encourage you to obtain your REAL ID or ensure you have an alternative acceptable form of identification well before the May 7, 2025, deadline.
