Car and Motorhome Rentals
Explore at your own pace – with no surprises.
It can be one of the best ways to explore on your own terms—but it can also come with a lot of sneaky fees and fine print.
Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! Here’s what you need to know (in plain English) so you can hit the road with confidence, avoid surprise charges, and make the most of your journey.

What to Know Before You Hit the Road
VAT (Value Added Tax)
-
What it is: A required sales tax that ranges from 15%–30%, depending on the country.
-
Where it shows up: On rental fees, insurance, and any add-ons (like GPS or one-way drop-offs).
-
Can I avoid it? Unfortunately, no. VAT on rentals is non-refundable—but make sure it’s included in your initial quote so you’re not surprised later. Look for terms like “VAT included” or “plus VAT” in your rental agreement.
One-Way Rental Fees
-
What it is: An extra charge if you return your vehicle to a different location.
-
Costs: Domestic one-ways may be free or low-cost, while international drop-offs can cost $100–$1,000.
-
Tips to avoid surprises: Stick to domestic returns when possible, or plan a round-trip itinerary to skip the international return fee.
Optional Equipment (GPS, Child Seats, WiFi, Winter Tires)
-
Daily cost: $5–$15 per item.
-
Heads up: These are optional, but some—like child seats—may be legally required.
-
Pro Tip: Bring your own GPS or child seat if convenient, or ask me about promotions that include free add-ons.
Local Rental Taxes
-
Also called: Road Tax, Eco Surcharge, Vehicle License Fee.
-
Cost: Usually $1–$5 per day.
-
What to expect: These vary by location and are often added at pickup. You can’t avoid them, but I’ll flag them for you in advance.
Location Surcharges
-
Where they apply: Airport, train station, and cruise port pickups.
-
Fees: Typically $30–$50.
-
Avoid it by: Picking up at a downtown location (if you don’t mind taking a taxi or transit). Airport pickups, while more expensive, often offer longer hours and greater convenience.
Cross-Border Travel Fees
-
What it is: An added charge if you plan to drive into another country.
-
Cost: $20–$50, depending on destination and rental company.
-
What to know: Always notify the rental company if you’re crossing borders. It’s required, and failing to do so can void your insurance.
Insurance Admin Fees
-
When it applies: After an accident, or if you decline local insurance in certain countries.
-
Typical cost: $30–$50 admin or processing fees.
-
Avoiding costs: I can help you choose the right coverage up front—whether it’s through your credit card or full-coverage add-ons—so you’re not stuck with unexpected charges.
Fuel Policies
-
Two main types:
-
Full-to-Full: Pick up and return with a full tank (recommended).
-
Full-to-Empty: Pay up front and return empty (often more expensive).
-
-
Tip: Choose Full-to-Full and refill just before returning the car. Save your gas receipt as proof.
Mileage Limits
-
Unlimited mileage rentals: No limits, no extra cost.
-
Limited mileage: May include 100–300 miles per day, then charge $0.50–$2 per extra mile.
-
Our tip: Unless you’re only driving short distances, go for the unlimited.
Driver Fees
-
Added fees for: Extra drivers, drivers under 25 or over 75.
-
Typical costs: $5–$20 per day.
-
Savings tip: Some quotes include a free additional driver—ask me to help you compare!
