Travel Insurance 101: Why It’s a Must for Your Next Trip
When planning a luxurious honeymoon, destination wedding, or that dream getaway, the last thing anyone wants to think about is what could go wrong. But the truth is, unexpected events can happen, and that’s where travel insurance comes in.
At New Dawn Vacations, I believe in curating stress-free, seamless travel experiences for my clients. That includes making sure you’re protected every step of the way. Here’s everything you need to know about travel insurance and why it’s a must-have for your next adventure.
Is it required to buy insurance when you work with me? No! But I HIGHLY recommend it.
What Is Travel Insurance?
Travel insurance is a safety net that helps protect you financially against unexpected events before and during your trip. Policies can cover anything from trip cancellations to medical emergencies, ensuring peace of mind while you travel.
What Does Travel Insurance Cover?
✈️ Trip Cancellation & Interruption
Life happens—whether it’s an illness, severe weather, or a family emergency, sometimes plans have to change. Travel insurance can reimburse you for non-refundable costs if you need to cancel or cut your trip short.
🏥 Medical Emergencies & Evacuations
Most health insurance plans don’t cover medical expenses abroad. If you get sick or injured while traveling, travel insurance can cover medical costs, hospital stays, and even emergency evacuations back home.
🧳 Lost, Stolen, or Delayed Luggage
Lost luggage? Stolen passport? Travel insurance helps replace essentials so you can continue your trip without added stress.
⏳ Travel Delays & Missed Connections
Flights can be unpredictable. If your flight is delayed or you miss a connection, insurance can cover accommodation, meals, and rebooking costs.
🚗 Rental Car Protection
Renting a car? Some policies include coverage for accidents, damage, and theft, which can save you from hefty rental company fees.
Do You Really Need Travel Insurance?
If you're investing in a luxury getaway, honeymoon, or destination wedding, YES—you need travel insurance! Here’s why:
✅ You’re booking high-value, non-refundable accommodations.
✅ You want protection in case of unexpected medical emergencies.
✅ You’re traveling internationally where healthcare may be expensive.
✅ You want peace of mind, knowing you're covered no matter what happens.
How to Choose the Right Policy
Not all travel insurance policies are the same. Here are some tips to find the best coverage:
🔹 Consider Your Trip Type: Adventure travel, cruises, and destination weddings may need specialized coverage.
🔹 Check Coverage Limits: Make sure medical, cancellation, and luggage protections fit your needs.
🔹 Work with a Travel Advisor: At New Dawn Vacations, I help my clients choose the best travel insurance to fit their trip.
Travel Insurance FAQs
Q: Are pre-existing medical conditions covered?
A: It depends. Some policies cover pre-existing conditions if you purchase insurance within a certain time frame after booking your trip (usually 10–21 days). Be sure to disclose any medical conditions upfront.
Q: How much does travel insurance cost?
A: Travel insurance typically costs between 4% to 10% of your total trip cost. Factors like your destination, trip length, age, and the type of coverage you choose affect the final price.
Q: When should I buy travel insurance?
A: Ideally, purchase travel insurance right after you book your trip — this ensures maximum coverage, especially for trip cancellation or pre-existing conditions. Waiting too long may limit your options.
Q: What travel insurance companies do you work with?
A: I use the following suppliers the most: RoamRight, Allianz, and Generali.
Q: Do certain countries require travel insurance?
A: Yes! Antarctica, Cuba, Ecuador (specifically the Galapagos), Egypt (required for some), Iran, Jordan, Laos, Nepal, Qatar, Rwanda, Seychelles, Turkey, Ukraine. As these guidelines can change, please refer to the most updated information.
Q: Can you insure frequent flyer miles or points that were used to purchase the trip?
A: No, because the cash value is hard to determine.
Q: What's not covered by travel insurance?
A: All plans are different, but generally the following are not covered: pre-existing medical conditions, known storms or outbreaks, pregnancy, war, civil unrest, and various dangerous activities.
Q: Are there year-long travel insurance policies available?
A: Yes! One plan could cover all of your travel. Ask me for more details. If you're a frequent traveler, I highly recommend going this route.
Q: Can I use the travel insurance supplied by my credit card?
A: Yes, but you must book the travel with that card. And every policy is different, so make sure you know what is and what is not covered.
Q: What credit cards typically come with travel insurance?
A: Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred, American Express, Southwest Rapid Rewards, United Explorer, Delta SkyMiles Gold, and Capital One Venture. I personally have the CSR and Southwest cards if you have any questions on those.
